The Brief

GKN Aerospace is a world leader in advanced precision engineering for the aerospace industry producing structures, systems and components for most of the world's leading military and civil aircraft types.

Trying to show off to best advantage their state-of-the-art manufacturing processes called for a different approach to filming.

The client wanted a completely different look and feel for what had preceded this video and an approach that was both high impact but captured a true flavour of their highly specialised skills and capabilities.

Filming was to be undertaken in both the UK and US while key messages were to be delivered by captions only.

A secondary but important requirement was to use this project as the starting point to create a high definition footage library which could be built upon in the future and where overall filming style could be kept consistent.

Solution

In order to create a fresh look and feel we settled for shooting on a Canon D5 stills camera in HD video mode which would enable us to create a 'film effect' where backgrounds would be in soft focus which in turn would enable foregrounds to 'punch out' strongly.

A variety of grip equipment was used to introduce camera movement and tracking to make 'reveals' even more visually appealing and dramatic.

Each scene was art directed and carefully lit to ensure that the visual style, look and feel was entirely consistent from location to location.

Result

The film 'Innovation in action' was premiered at Farnborough International 2010 and continues to be a central part of the company's presentations.
